Abandoned Mine at Night
This old relic stands in one of the volcanic areas in the Mojave Desert. I got a little board and was playing around with strobes before the moon came out since the nights are so long now. The long exposure picked up the glow of sunset that lingered on for quite some time. I kind of like it for my first light painting image of 2010.

I wonder what this thing looked like when it was brand new

Happy 2010 everyone! :wavey:

Well done, Steve. It's images like this that make me wish
that the "Other" gallery had not been eliminated.

Cropped and removed the white box.

Robert, I don't recall that gallery when was that around?

Second image much better Steve, I was going to suggest removing the white box, maybe even the white post, too. I like this, I think the red glow adds a little more to the "mystery" of the image :toast:

Reno thanks, it's amazing how much of this stuff is scattered arcoss the earth.

Very cool Steve. I really like the mix of color and nice work with the paint job.

I wonder what they were mining there?

I really like the light painting here and the color in the sky is a nice addition. Is this the one off the 14?

Steve,

I agree the cropped version is much better. Overall, this is a dramatic shot.

I am learning how to use strobes for portrait and glamour shots. I am now using a master and slave strobe for the first time. I have never used strobes in landscape photography.

Since the scene here is pretty large, I wonder how many strobes you used to illuminate the metal and lumber. I understand the concept of leaving the shutter open to capture the ambient light, but I am not sure what is meant by "Light Painting."

Thanks

Rudy sent you an email with an explanation since it's not on any maps.

Roland, I used a couple of strobes and did some creative diffusing. I took me about 3 tries to get it down to a way that I liked.

Lon, I'm guessing basalt and anything else they can find, but really I would have no idea.

Very cool! You're really getting the use of those off-camera strobes down. The machinery is lit just enough to give details, but also dark enough to allow for imagination and keep the mood. One small observation: if you happen to have an exposure with that area in the LRC (piece with what looks like a handle sticking up out of it) slightly lit with a strobe, that might be a nice addition. Other than that, this more than works for me... good stuff!
