Hawk diving from perch
I think this is a Cooper's Hawk, just shortly after leaving his perch in a tree where he had been looking for lunch.

What a capture!

Looks like a Cooper to me, especially in the woodland setting. Dark helmet and banded tail are signature features. Nice capture, especially the gleam in the eye.

Awesome shot! He looks serious about his pending lunch!

Wow, cool shot, Larry! I'm thinking this is a red-shouldered hawk...

Good job Larry.

I'm in the Red Shouldered camp. Nice capture regardless.

Thanks everyone.

Why do hawks have to be so hard to ID?
Posted by Wayne Rhodus on January 6, 2010 at 11:05 PM
Hey Larry, I won't bother to get out a reference book for the id but I will say I really like the position of the tail feathers, wings and tilt of it's head. I like the dynamics of those elements a lot. Good stuff!

Thanks Wayne and Aaron.

I sure wish it would warm up a bit. 7 degrees this AM.
