Wild Mink with prey
Haven't been much active in recent months, neither here or out with the camera. I have just finished my first book (on eagles) and it has taken it's toll on my photography time.

But y.day I went out in the snow, and witnessed this heartbreaking scene of a Wild Mink catching a Little Grebe yesterday. American Minks are not a natural predator in Denmark, but nevertheless lives in the wild in many places here. The local wildlife have problems as they are not used to such a skilled hunter. The Grebe was caught underwater, and still struggling it was pulled up on shore.

Canon MarkIII + 500/4; iso800, f4.5 1/250, handheld, cropped.

(A full frame from the serie in Fauna forum).

Amazing photo. I'm guessing you should have European mink naturally?

Certainly is an amazing shot that fully highlights the impact of American Mink: if you could get shots like that every time it'd be worth going out less often!!

Hi a very interesting image of a ruthless preditor with no natural control mechanism, the only good mink in the UK and Europe is a dead mink.

Great stuff Helge. Sad to see but highlights the problem.
The "do gooders" that released them originally have a lot to answer for !

Terrific shot Helge, and one with a lot of meaning and gravity to it.

It's often hard to remain dispassionate when witnessing such a thing, especially when the consequence involves a species like Mink.

The picture of a lifetime. It is certainly the only picture of a mink with prey that I can remember seeing. Excellent.

great shot, what you need with you is a gun mate. I have seen them running around in the lincolnshire area, and yes the do gooders do have somthing to awnser for.

A cracking capture. Whatever peoples personal feelings are about mink I have to admire their hunting skills as much as I admire all our native mustelids.

I just think that this is an excellent piece of wildlife photography. Funny how nobody says "poor fish" when the grebe catches its dinner. Top shot.
