I recently upgraded my computer, which uses Windows 7, as well as installed Elements 8. NEF files from my Nikon only show a generic icon, regardles of how I set the view options not the image like I got on my old system with XP, which also has Elements 5 and 8 loaded. I did have to install a different version of camera raw in the plug-in folder on PSE 5, and tried the same on PSE 8, but failed to get image icon. Any suggestions. Thanks for any info.

For what its worth, I use PSE8 on a Windows 7 machine and do not have any problems with my Nikon RAW files. My version of Win 7 is 32 bit Ultimate. I don't know if that makes a difference. I did upgrade PSE8 from 7. Perhaps that's the difference.

Check to see what program in Windows is set as the default when you open your pictures folder. I had the same problem with Vista because Window Photo Gallery doesn't show thumbnails for RAW, but Windows Live Photo Gallery does. I don't recall whether Windows Live comes with, or is an optional free add-on, but it is worth it, and then you can tell windows to always use Windows live when you open that folder.
