Does anyone know if the Nikon HK28 hood for the AFS 500 Mk2 will fit the MK1 (hood HK24)? The main UK Nikon dealer say they are not compatible but I think both lenses are the same, or almost the same diameter.
I have managed to lose my hood in deep, drifting snow and think my chances of finding it in the melt a bit slim. A new HK24 will take a a few weeks and cost a ludicrous sum for what it is, but a few HK28s are knocking around half price.
All suggestions most welcome.
Many thanks
Terry

I don't know if this will help but I had a similar situation not long ago in looking for a lens hood for my 18-55DX VR kit lens. I researched a number of sources but found the correct hood at Nikon USA. The original hood had been superseded by another part number but the hoods were essentially identical. You might try the NikonUSA web site to see if they have any information on it. Good Luck
I lost mine too, and made a perfectly acceptible substitute using heavy black cardboard and velcro. Really. Cost me about $10 in materials. Finally found one from a guy here for about $150.
I can't find much info on any of the Nikon sites and my lens isn't listed in the discontinued lines. But I suspect you are right that the hoods are essentially similar.
I have thought about a temporary home-made solution Sandy but I need something fairly robust as I use the hood mostly to protect the lens from bumps, rain and snow. I often stand the lens on it too.
