If Larry hadn't posted his version a of a sun pillar on New Years morning, I may not have known about it. It happened to me this morning while I was watching waterfowl. It was very obvious and a very bold beam of light. It hard to miss and lasted for a few minutes. I can't wait till it happens to me again!
You'll notice the small flight of ducks in the upper right corner along with the frozen lake. The frozen lake made for some interesting shots. I ended up shooting several hundred images starting with ice then switched over to chasing Great Egrets along the shoreline.
My idea of a great morning!

The Great Egrets were bedded down on the icy shoreline. It was only 8 degrees.

Karla had said the same thing about being between two trees. It wasn't planned. It's no real problem shooting the pillar. It last for several minutes before the sun comes up.
I didn't shoot for a great depth of field. The ice is a little soft. I wished had caught that mistake. But the ducks are crisp.
