Bullfinch in the snow
perhaps a bit different this one not entirely sure about it, was lying down on the ice trying to photograph a dipper when this bullfinch flew down and started feeding on the weeds poking up through the snow on the opposite bank, did actually get a shot of the bullfinch and dipper in the same shot but not worth posting

 i think a frame might be necessary

Hey Jack

Fantastic shot, love it. I've just done some similar shots with robins and dunnocks though mine didn't have the advantage of the sprig of vegetation. Top marks

God idea Jack, but the problem for me is the subject placement within the white field - as is it seems to bare little relation to the bounding frame - perhaps a re-frame on a rule of thirds point might improve things a tad.

But it's got great potential...imo, of course :wavey:

Hi Jack,

I too like the idea. On my monitor the edges of the finch and the broken part of the vegetation don't look that smooth. I think it's just because it's a small image. My mind also tends to trick me into thinking there is something missing from the vegetation where it emerges from the snow and at the break.

I'd like to see a little more detail in those areas. I'm all for experimenting though - glad you're mixing it up!

Personally I would like to see a bit more detail in the snow (not lots but a little). I think it may work if it was bigger in the frame.

I quite like it, certainly different. I agree with Chris it seems to be suffering form compression issues as it doesn't look very smooth.

It certainly needs a border, might look really good printed onto a black border...

Jack,

This is excellent, I really like it. Well taken.

Sorry Jack but doesn't do much for me at all. It looks like half of it is missing. Maybe if the image was larger. All the rest like it so perhaps its just me. :frown:

Hi Jack

I like it, but would have looked so much better larger or is this a big crop!

I certainly applaud the idea. Just a little small to appreciate fully. I agree some detail in the snow would help a lot.

I like it too, but also feel a bit more texture in the snow would improve the image!

Great shot, but I think that there is just too much blank canvas. I think you could achieve the same effect with it larger in the frame and as Andy suggests placed perhaps on the thirds. You have everything you need in the picture and a re-crop would give it even more impact imo.

Great shot but I think there is just too much white below the bird. :toast:

Composition nits aside, I really like this. Lovely shot.

Cheers,

Like the shot and the approach - maybe a bit more detail in the snow but the really high key look moves more into the artistic genre for sure.
