Red-Tailed Hawk, Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge, Washingon, USA
Canon 7D, 300L f/2.8 + 1.4 TC, 1/800 sec @ f/6.3, ISO 3200
Another shot of a Red-Tailed Hawk in Ridgefield. This is pretty much a full frame shot, just cropped for esthetics. What amazed me, really was how clean the image was at ISO 3200...
Incredible detail around the eyes. I feel like I wish his head was turned a little more to the camera, but at the same time there is something very unique about the position. I like it.

Wow, 3200... I've got to get a new camera. The detail is great. Are those little water droplets or dander. I agree with everything Ryan said.
The first time I looked at the photo, I didn't notice it was shot at 3200...WOW! Cheers to the 7D.

Thanks folks. Yes, the 7D is pretty cool. It also includes distance in the EXIF now...I was 4 meters or roughly 13 feet away...John, those are rain drops, not dander... He was sitting on a sign as I came around the corner. He was on my right side and I drove up as slow as I could...I was surprised he stayed long enough for me to roll down the window and shoot across the passenger seat, out the window, hand-held...not recommended, but once in a while it works...
Holy cow! Such a unique look at this hawk! The eye detail is gorgeous and the shallow dof really helps the viewer to zero in on it– kind of like the hawk zeroes in on its prey. Even relaxed on a perch (at least I guess it was) the stare looks so intense. Super, super shot.
About the 7D: I'm a Nikon shooter myself, but can identify with the pleasure of the performance of your camera. The Nikon D700 is giving me shots I could never get before, including ones at way high ISO; about blows me away. Congrats on the 7D, David.

Beautiful detail. I like the angle and the fact he is looking away from the camera.

The 7D is looking strong at ISO 3200. Its got to be a birder's dream.
