Have you all seen this guy's work: http://www.joelgrimes.com. His portraits are amazing but I'm most astonished by his "Desert Life" series. Certainly not straight up nature but clearly the dude is talented and creative.

Dodges and Burns a bit like Cole Thompson. Interesting.

Very nice work, he does seem to like to center everything, I thought there was a rule about that. LOL

A lot of his shots are HDR shots, I just read an article on him last week.

There's a ton of post production work on these, but it sure makes for an artistic style. Man, those shots are all fantastic to look at. I love people's vision and continue to be amazed at their creativity.

Jody: Most of his portraits are HDR. Actually, they're composites. He shoots the background in HDR and then shoots the portrait in a studio. He uses PS to paste the portrait on top of the appropriate background. Lots of work but the results are freakin' stunning.

Bret, thanks for the link,. As said before, lots of post production work but it makes for a dazzeling presentation....Also, the guy is a lighting master as is in evidence with the portrait stuff... Scott, Although he is centering much of his work he is using it as a compositional technique to tell his story.....guys like this know the rules, they just know how to break them for effect. I, too, am amazed at the creativity of some people.......thanks again for posting......Joe Rogers

Pretty stuff--modern but with a nostalgic feel to it. Almost makes me want to get into portrait photography!

Some really neat stuff. A bit too much of an HDR feel to his shots for me, but the desert stuff is amazing.

Glad you all enjoyed the link. I'd love to take one of his lighting workshops. Maybe later this year...

Bret, I have been using some of his lighting tips for portraits (from his blog). He's very nice to share his ideas so freely and allow others to learn from his lighting mastery. I really like his lighting ideas and they do work out nicely. I'm glad I found him for the portrait stuff, but never even noticed his landscape work. Thanks for pointing it out.
