Hi all
Spent New Year down in Somerset with some friends and managed to get down to the estuary. I took a variety of shots with varying shutter and panning speeds but I felt this was the best composition and 'sharpness'. I thought these arty shots were far more pleasing than the static shots of the flock as they flew past. (I'll put a static shot of them below this post for comparison).
Comments and crits welcome.

The static version of the one above.

I really like the water/birds but a not too sure about the bottom in image 1. It's a wee bit at odds with the delicate feel of the top which is really lovely. However in the 2nd image I think the bottom works very well - it really adds to the shot. Interesting comparison!

Interesting John. Thanks for your comment. I suppose this is due to the grass in the top image forming a block of colour and shape due to the panning motion whereas in the bottom image you can still make out the broken up edges of the grass blades. Interesting comment though.
I prefer the first image, it has a nice sense of movement and as none of the birds are obscured I have no problem with the foreground grasses. Good stuff, especially as some of the dunlin are sharp.
The first pic I like better, perfect motion blur.

Your panned shot is very good; almost perfectly in synch with flight speed of the birds. You've also managed to catch an attractive distribution of birds. A good piece of work in my opinion and I can see no reason for cropping it.

Hello Ian.
Agree with the first one for me as well.
Not really tried much of this type of work as I've really had the chance. But images like this will remind me to try when the chance does come along.
