Hey gang, there's a probability that I'll be taking a quick road to Oakland in the next few weeks. I'm guessing I can make it to the SLC area in time for sunset, shoot sunset, then drive for a few more hours of darkness. I'd like advice on a decent sunset location or two that I can make a beeline for, so if you've got any ideas, please let me know. Is Timp a good option? How about Great Salt Lake? Hit me w/your best ideas! Thanks!

I don't mean to put a damper on your road trip, but the inversion has made for really crappy conditions lately. We're supposed to get a round of storms in this week so maybe the air will clear up. But seriously, it hasn't been good so far this year. I live at the base of Timpanogos and we have had days that I couldn't even see the mountain. In the event that the air clears I would recommend a trip down Provo Canyon. From Deer Creek Reservoir there are some stunning views of Timp. Good luck and pray for a storm.

Deer Creek Res side of Timp is more of a sunrise location. There might be some good sunset vantage points of Timp from the area around the entrance of Provo Canyon, but I don't know any exact locations. I'm stumped.

Todd, this may not be what you had in mind, but I'd consider skipping Northern Utah. If you're crossing Utah on I-70, I suggest going into Nevada on US-50 instead of I-80. It's a far more scenic drive, and the road will hook up with I-80 in western Nevada before hitting Reno so the rest of your trip should not change. Send me an email offline if you want more info.

I do like Guy's suggestion, but if you are going on 80 you can get off the highway at exit 104 (Saltair) take a right then an immediate left on the frontage road and go for a couple of miles to the end of the road and there's a rock formation there (note: don't follow the pavement all the way to the marina. As the road turns toward the marina take the snow covered dirt road on the left). I drive by there twice a day. The sunset views of Antelope Island and the Salt Lake are pretty cool. The snow covered flats along the lake have some pretty cool shaped pools also. For Timp sunset shots you got to get to the west side of Utah Lake down by Provo. I personally haven't shot from there, but I have seen a few nice images (Willie Holdman). That location might require a little investigation to find the best spots. There are also some Tooele county locations (exit 99 and the Rowley exit) that aren't too bad either. I could give you more detail, but it would take too long here. If you would like to know just drop me an e-mail. I am in Ohio right now and can't get to a computer very often though. adios, jEfF
