Spectacular action shots from one of the world's greatest races.

1. I don't think they even ran the Dakar race last year due to terrorism concerns. In fact, if I remember correctly, they kinda waited til real late in the game to cancel it.
EDIT: Should've read the lead. Looks like it ran in S. America instead of Northern Africa. 5,500+ miles? Wow!

2. The Boston Globe's "Big Picture" series is perpetually running some of the best photo portfolios one could ever see. Their series of Mars shot from the Mars Orbiter were unreal. This is another great collection.

3. Shot #12 -- OMFG!

4. Didn't notice any shots of Robby Gordon. I can't stand him as a NASCAR driver, but I always pull for him in the off-road races. He finished 8th this year.

5. I'm surprised MORE spectators aren't hurt or killed, the way they always line the course in the most foolhardy places.

6. I see even helicopters weren't safe this year!

7. Thanks for posting the link!

This is really incredible! I love all of the dune shots and the one where all of the SUV's wheels are off the ground. Crazy stuff!

Incredible shots. I've always wondered why spectators set so close. We are all human and make mistakes, even these professional drivers.

I'm glad others enjoyed these as much as I did. And Todd, I did the same thing - looked at the shots, wondered why they were taken in South America not Africa, THEN read the intro paragraph. Doh!
