Goldfinch
Two hours spent in the Kingfisher hide at Slimbridge WWT waiting for the Bittern, this was the best I got. Two very cold hours I hasten to add.

Hope you like it.

Bitterns have a funny habit of vanishing whenever I turn up as well, not that they are easy birds at the best of times. I would say that a goldfinch on teasel is still a good reward for those cold hours. I do wonder though if a portrait crop would suit this shot better, assuming you have sufficient canvas to do so.

I think I'd look at a portrait crop as well Brian, you have a lot of blank canvas that is not really adding anything to the shot for me. That said it's a nice shot and I like the little bit of rim-lighting. If it's any consolation, we turned up to try for a bittern that had been present locally for a fortnight only to meet a load of people wondering where it had gone. Still the goldie is some consolation.

Nice shot, I prefer the portrait, but perhaps with a little extra room on the left, so it's not so central. Really like the lighting and slightly fluffed up feathers. :toast:

Hi Brian,

Nice shot. I personally like the first, perhaps with a touch more sharpening and a slither (really not much) off the top is all I would suggest. Whats the background out of interest, water or snow?

Cheers,

Lewis.

It's the first for me as it has a lovely, graphic simplicity and bold punctuations of color :toast:

Everyone is different I guess and comp is an individual thing. I prefer the first personally hence the original post but I also warmly welcome any suggestions and am willing to look at anything that might make my photography better.
Hi Lewis it was mostly frozen water behind the bird.

Thanks everyone.
