The composition works just right for me. Personally I much prefer it with the bramble left in, for several reasons, i.e. it creates a pleasing visual balance with the bird, it adds a little something to that half of the frame, which would otherwise look a little empty without it and also because it just kind of looks right with the birds beak and eye pointing roughly in that direction.
I like the combination of pale and dark background too.

Thanks both. Good response. The backdrop is actually bits of snow that were left and it can either make or break a background. According to the birds positions it caused a lot of throw outs.
Ps forgot to mention, took out a small blue blob in the background(blue tit going past I think ) Didn't make a very good job of it!

it is a good shot think the composition does work the bird needs somewhere to look and the background doesn t look to bad at all I always like a plain background but this does look fine to me and I would keep the bramble

If it were mine, I probably would have removed the bramble simply to tidy up the image, and toned the bg a tad as I find the pale areas ever so slightly distracting. The consensus so far however is keep the bramble.
Maybe you could post a bramble free version for us to compare

I've taken the larger bit of bramble out and cloned the background but it was a pig !!
The squarer crop didn't look right with the bramble out so it just shows how a bit of vegetation can balance a shot.
Interesting stuff though.
Thanks

Hi John
Both work for me but I prefer your original post as the repost is bordering on being too large in the frame for me - love the pose!

Hello John.
Two lovely images but I also think the first one is better, but I do like the light on the bird and the detail is very nice.
