The smash/grab scum are busy on the Big Sur coast again!!! I had my truck broken into this morning between 0800 and 0930 at the roadside parking area along Hwy 1 at Garrapata, the parking area north of the barn/cypress tree parking area, west side of the road; three other vehicles were parked there, none touched. They got my cell phone, wallet and check book. They seek "targets of opportunity" stuff they can see through your windows; all I had in view was my cell phone. Threw a rock through passenger side window grabbed the phone, found the wallet and check book and ran, tried to break my front window before leaving, window was cracked in two places and the rock left on the dash board. Took me about 3 hours to make all the notifications and get my bank accounts canceled and new checks and debit card issued. My credit card company, Capital One, did a stellar job, as usual; they had already called my residence before my return home and advised of suspicious activity on my debit and credit card; they put a stop on all CC/debit card transactions. The low-life scumbag thieves had already attempted fuel purchases in Carmel Highlands, Freedom and Watsonville. Be forewarned
I have parked close to this spot many times. Thanks for the warning.
Mike.

Wow Reno,
Sorry to hear about that. That is really bad! I park in that area on a weekly basis. So thanks for the heads up. I'll have to make sure to not leave any valuables in my car. From what I have heard it can happen at Point Lobos and other Big Sur locations (mainly northern Big Sur spots).
That is something which happens a lot in other beautiful locations with a lot of tourists as well like Hawaii. But it still sucks.
BTW, I shot the Big Sur coast yesterday as well further south. I went to check out the coastal snow on the peaks and found some down by Lucia. I'll post some shots later. I was the only one at the spots I shot. And on the way back I saw 100s of cars parked at Point Lobos.

I'm sorrythat this happened to you. Reno. When I walk out from my
vehicle on a photo trek, I'm always concerned that this sort of a thing
might happen to me.
Oh man what a bummer, Reno!! ....
It is so hard to be out of sight or ear shot of our vehicles these days. It takes only seconds to break, grab, and run like those jokers did. It's very hard not to leave some items in a vehicle when traveling out and about. On a recent outing and returning to my vehicle parked at a trail head late in the afternoon I could see broken tempered glass laying all over the ground below the driver's side window. I thought for sure I got hit. But, I was lucky once again, it must have been some poor previous soul who had parked there earlier. Glad to at least hear you got all the financial stuff closed down before they got away with much of anything on record.

I stress over this every time I leave my car at a trailhead. Glad to hear that the damages were to some extent minimal, but the time wasted get everything in order and just feeling violated must be sickening.

well, I had gone through this 2 years back. my wife left her wallet inside. we went down the coast at Prescadero just for 30mins and it was done by then...I was surprised to hear the cop say that this is very common crime in this area and these are bunch of crooks nuking out money for either fun or alcohol or drugs. I got all my CC canceled with 15mins and they got away with few dollars in the wallet. the biggest headache was to get it repaired and waist of time associated with it...never ever leave anything valuable inside the car that is visible from outside...
