Eider - Somateria Mollissima (c) + re edit
I took a trip to Slimbridge this week in the hope of seeing the Bittern that has been reported there.

He didn't show, so for the 10 seconds that the sun showed itself, I decided to get arty......

Critique and comments most welcome.

(Thanks to SJK for processing help).

re-cropped to remove bottom and lower lhs dark areas.....

I prefer the second posting Graham, as it's tighter in the depth. Some nice detail overall, but would like to have more in the lower half. The blacks have not 'blocked/filled in' and the beady each is a nice touch. The soft pastel colours are sympathetic, juxtapose to the black detail of the head. A crop certainly to get this, what about 40 yards?

Yep, works well for me. Second is the one. Really well spotted. Would be nice in b&w too. Well caught.

Creativity is something that sets a photographer above the rest and creative imagery stands out like a beacon in a sea of record shots.

Nicely executed Graham - I do so hope you shot the image with this comp in mind.

I prefer the proportions of the first image, but it's let down by the feather colour change so I can understand the 2nd version.

In the 2nd image there looks to be something odd going on with the highlight area 2/3rds the way down on the left - tonally it's not quite the same as it is in the first image - has someone been playing around??

Blacks and mids look great in both, and other than the 'odd looking bit' mentioned I think I'd go for the 2nd image overall.

Nice one matey - you do realise you've gotta produce this or better for every post from now on..!!

No more record shots.............

Thanks guys.

Andy - this was exactly what I was going for and 20 minutes of waiting on one wet knee for the sun to lighten the gloom and for the Eider to open it's eye paid off.

From looking again, you are right re the odd bit - there was a blown and contrasty patch on the original which I've tried to tone down - you can see it on the 1st post.

Other than that - I'm pleased with the result and thanks for the help.

The second crop is perfect, I really like this so different to what you normally see.

Well no wonder they make pillows from these, this one looks very comfortable Graham.
On a more serious note I can see why you re-cropped it, it works a treat. There's bags of detail in the eye, beautiful tones and texture to the feathers and the light is spot on. Looks like your wet wait paid off. My only criticism is that you have time to go to slimbridge and I'm stuck behind a desk :toast: :toast: :toast: :toast:

Great imagination gone into this Graham. Very nice indeed. :wavey: :jump:
I think I will have to start "thinking outside the box". Oh how I hate that expression :frown:
