Lower Longpool Falls
Since this is so close to home, it provides me with a perfect opportunity to practice. My son and I went to the lower and upper falls last Sunday. This seems to be the best shot of the lower falls. I would appreciate any critique that you would offer. There is no crop and very little PP, although I did knock down the highlights of the falls a bit. I know it is not even close to most of the images I see on this forum, so please tell me how to make it better.

I think you have done very well. The falls do look a little flat. I usually try to shoot these more from the side which seems to add a little depth to them. My suggestion is wait till mid April and return when stuff has started to green up.

This looks like an interesting place to explore and it is nice that it is close to home for you. My recommendation would be to keep experimenting and look for different perspectives and compositions. You might also try some close up intimate shots of the falls and surrounding cascades as well. The more you experiment the more you will learn. The only part of this that doesn't quite seem to work for me is the bottom of the frame. It feels a little cramped but I don't know what the foreground looked like. It might be interesting to see if you could frame the foreground with the outlet of the stream as it would help create a flow to the composition for the eye to follow. Overall, this is still a nice image as presented and you are definitely lucky to have such a location close to home.

Jan, I like this shot a lot for your falls exposure. You seem to have hit the water perfect. My suggestion would be to try zooming in a bit closer with the falls occupying most of the picture. Also, possibly a 2 shot blend one for the falls and another for the rocks, etc once the greens have come back in spring. This is a great place! :toast:

Very Good, Jan. Makes me want to check out this location my next trip up....for the uniformed exactly where is this fall and is it a difficult hike?

Jan...I think it looks pretty good. It could use a little more saturation for my taste, but that's just me. Have you ever been up there when it is frozen? It is a great one to shoot with ice because it is so accessable. Make sure to check it out if we have another cold snap.

these are some great little falls. i like your take on them. i'm not great at critiquing, but if this were my shot i would try a couple things:

1. play around with cropping a little off the top, maybe even the left side of the shot. crop suggestions are always tough, because until i see the result, it's hard for me to really know if it will work or not.

and/or

2. dodge/burn to really pull the eye from the wooded area up top to the falls and down to the bottom right corner. lead the eye through the scene so to speak.
