Banding

A friend posted an image that contains banding in the blue sky area and insists that both the low res and high res version show the banding. Does anyone have any ideas of why there would be banding in the high res. He says he did not use a polarizer if that matters.
thanks,,,,Joe Rogers
sorry, this should have be posted in the Digital Imaging Forum. JR

I get this with my 5Dmk2 without using a polarizer on RAW files too Joe.

JPEG or RAW file?
Banding in skies is quite a bit more common than one may think, especially after any editing steps have been taken. One of the very few advantages left to film, IMO. Starting with a 12 (or 14) bit RAW file gives a person much more data to help (but not totally) eliminate banding.
The only effective after the fact fix I've ever seen for banded skies is to add a modest amount of grain/noise to the skies. That may seem counterintuitive, but it really works.

Hopefully, they aren't shooting with a Nikon D1. Wow, looking back at my older files did that camera ever have banding issues!

John and Jody are correct. Banding is still present even in newer cameras and can even be present in high resolution originals. In my experience it appears most commonly when someone is trying to lighten an underexposed image (or shadowy part of an image) during their processing. Shooting in RAW rather than JPEG will help and also "exposing to the right" (very slightly overexposing an image, a half-stop or so but it depends on the situation, from what would appear to be its optimal exposure on the LCD) can help minimize banding.
