Morning on Last Dollar Road
Hi folks,

The weekend before last I took an impromptu drive to scout out some locations I haven't visited yet. I took this picture one morning and wanted to get some feedback from the experts. It's not one of those killer shots with the sun peeking over the mountains but I thought the light reflecting across the fresh snow was cool. I have a hard time teasing out those subtleties without making other parts of an image a bit wonky.

Thanks for looking!

Sweet! Great job on the exposure, Jeff.

I'm no expert, but I sure can appreciate a fine sunrise like this one.
I do wish that the foliage didn't block so much of that fenceline, and even though the image may not be technically tilted, it still has the appearance of a counterclockwise tilt that's a bit offputting.

I agree with John on the perception of this being tilted. Even if it's not, perception is reality, and I would consider rotating it CW to see if that solves it. Having said that, it's a magnificent shot, and I love how you have not overdone the foreground. There's enough detail to get your point across.

Jeff

Great shot! I prob would not have noticed what John and Todd mentioned. Then again thats why im on the sight to learn.

I love the comp and exposure. Very well done.

Sweet morning, Jeff. I think the forground exposure is just fine. You certainly don't want it much brighter.

Great image, but I agree with comments above. I would crop/tilt this so your horizon is flat.

Great sky. I'd agree with the above comments as well.

Cool. I like the unconventional comp from this location. The tilt issue John and Todd point out also occurred to me, but I think you might have cropped it this way to center the bushes and fence line in the lower foreground, and, respectfully disagreeing with the above, I think it really works as-is. Re-tilting it in favor of the higher horizon would put more attention on the mountains, but I think the current emphasis on the foreground would suffer as a result.

Nice job of controlling the exposure, the lower clouds almost blew out but you've got them under control.

Great colors in this image. The foreground brush kinda overcomes the image but I've been there before and understand it.

I like it just the way it is. This is a beautiful image, Jeff. My only nit is the blown out yellows, but that's to be expected shooting right into the sunrise.

Nice light and color, and the others have made the important points for improvements.

Folks, thanks for all the great feedback.

Oddly enough, I wasn't put off by the descending slope and I'm actually pretty picky about a straight horizons and odd angles like that. For me this image was all about the light cascading across the snow.

Regardless, I followed the advice to rotate and crop but the comp really fell apart for me; it made those already-too-large bushes bigger (they looked cool because of layer of frost but that didn't come through).

I also noticed the colors are more saturated here than they are in PS too.

Anyway, I guess I'll just have to go back down after the next storm. Oh darn.

Thanks again for the thoughtful feedback.

Great color in the sky. I also like the sagebrush in the foreground.

I love this as is. Great moment/light, nice lines, the subtle glow on the land. Excellent work all around. I don't perceive any tilt, I actually like the diagonals. In this comp, the bushes provide a nice anchor - to keep your eye from being swept off the left edge by the fence line.

Excellent capture! I see nothing wrong with this image whatsoever. :toast:
