Hi Guys,
Perhaps anybody of you know this problem or might have heard of it..
Today when out in the field my sensor got problems and all images i shot turned out black at the lcd screen or in some cases black with some purple stripes in them. Other images from that morning where visible so it's not the lcd screen that's broken but propably the sensor...
I have read on the internet that old Canon Powershot camera's have had such CCD Sensor problems and they have been replaced for free but when i contacted Canon today they said that my warrenty had passed and that i had to inform at the service centre what the cost would be for replacing the sensor. This turned out to be a 1000,- euro wich is almost as much as a refurbished Mark III...!!!
Then when i contacted Canon again another guy said the sensor problem was known to them and it had to be replaced for free but the service centre says it;s only with the old powershots and not the Mark III's so i still would have to pay 1000.- euro's for replacing the sensor..
When i sell the Mark III one day i will never be able to get that 1000.- euro's back so i have a big dillemma...
Hope one of you guys knows what to do or perhaps knows of a cheaper way to replace the sensor..??
help...
greetings,
Jeroen Stel

Buggered if you do and buggered if you dont, I dont think you have any option but to send it in just for confirmation that its the sensor thats at fault-you never know it may be an electrical problem or something cheaper

Strange thing is that the sensor looks fine to me..??
But perhaps you don't see it from the outside..?
Had a similar problem with an old D100 AND D2H,new shutter units were needed on both!

There's a slight possibility that its not your CCD but, processor. I think if the sensor had malfunctioned completely you wouldn't get any lines or colours just black. Strange question but what happens when you put it into live view?

Good question Joe..
I just tested Live view and that also turned out black all the time..
Have you had the mk111 for more than 2 years?
Remember that it was a 2 year warrantee Canon gave with them and not the standard one year that comes with most of their other products.

Hi Ed,
I have tried several cards but all come out the same...
To John: I have had the camera since August 2007 so warrenty is gone...unfortunately..
To Phil: Is this data compression board part of the sensor or is it a different part of the camera? And could it be this has broken down due to the cold and snow we had yesterday (despite that i had the camera and lens protected by a thick coat..)?
Hope you can answer this one as i am very curious..
I have a D300s and since I've had it there have been times when the camera has refused to focus, but still lets me press the shutter. I will get a very very dark image which is usually jet black but will sometimes have shapes of the subject that you can make out. I have not had the purple lines yet though... Is this similar to what you got?
As my lens now needs to be repaired I think it may have been a loose lens mount but I don't know for sure

Hi Oscar,
I do not think it is the same problem as my sensor only gives black images and accasionally with a few pixelated purple lines as shown above. My camera functions as normal and focus works accurate but all images turn out black.
