Purple doze
High tide brings a few moments rest and respite for busy Purple Sandpipers - and the chance for a slightly different portrait which I suspect might not be everyones cup of tea!

7D
500mm + 1.4x
ISO 200 1/160 f5.6
Bean bag and a coat underneath it to get the height I needed amongst the rocks!!

A really nice shot Mark, but my eye is being drawn to the yellow blob! Lichen/flower...be tempted to clone out!

Yellow blob aside, I like this - there is a connection with the bird as he is clearly watching you and alert :toast:

Mark on my screen there is a line running from top to bottom on right hand side?

Can't see the line on my screen or on the Tiff or JPEG either Major so not sure what it is but thanks.

As for yellow lichen - easily removed but I prefer not to with these things: it's one of the reasons I posted this to see how much of an issue it was for people as it was taken.

Here it is easily removed as you say.

Like you I often try to post full frame with minmum processing, but often that is not the best pic.

I certainly prefer the repost. Nice intimate shot of a bird at temporary repose. :toast:

Very nice Mark but I prefer it with the yellow as it seems to complement the slightly dark yellows at the bottom of the frame and gives the image more balance.

Phil.

Hi Mark,

I like the re-post the best. A good intimate viewpoint :toast:

Hi Mark, I like this and I prefer the second one. How did you manage this image was it just DOF or something else? :toast:
Posted by john macpherson on February 4, 2010 at 12:47 PM
I like the image very much, the diagonal mush is really nice contrasting with the bird's curves, but the yellow blob was distracting, so the lower image is, for me 'better'. However what struck me after considering your repost and your comment about prefering not to tamper, is - which is 'better' - removing the offending yellow blob OR adding a few more to make it a rather more yellow blobby pic? One for the philosophers I think!

Hi John C - just a narrow dof, a whacking great rock in front of the bird and spotting the shot!! No blurring in P/Shop I can assure you - too much time/hassle.

Hello Mark.

I've never really been into all this mushy forground stuff but I do like this and it's the repost for me. The yellow blob just pulls my eye and weakes the impact of the bird which is very nice.

I do hope you lot are not slowly converting me as I keep getting ideas for mushy pictures

Prefer repost Mark looks good. That line must be my ageing works screen as I can see no sign here.

I like this unusual portrait. Its the second post for me Mark. Mind you if we all wore brown suits........

I am torn between the two Mark...so either way a cracking image

I guess the second is more tidy, but when was nature ever tidy. I think that we are in danger of producing too many images that didn't really exist sometimes. I want to prefer the first.
Whichever it's an excellent shot.

I rather like the first one - if I was to do anything I'd tone down the top yellow blob a tad, but keep it there. I would certainly be happy with either as its a great pose and the diagonal oof area sets it off well I think.

can't make up my mind about the 2 posts.. whilst the yellow does pull the eye the vast amount of 'grey' FG could be just a little to much for the subtle colours of the bird.. I like it very much but can't make up my mind about the FG..?
