Removing CF card

Is it OK to simply remove a CF card from a built in card reader on a Vista OS. Or do I need to tell the OS I want to do that and wait for the PC to tell me it is "OK to remove the mass storage device"?

Thanks,
Ken

I always just remove it and have never had a problem. Just make sure you format your card after every use.

It's best to 'eject' the card using the OS. That way, you reduce the chance of errors occurring..

The reason for the "safe removal" is that for some operations, the OS will actually not write the data to the card until some future point. When you "safe remove" you ensure that there aren't any pending writes to the card that would cause issues if you simply removed the card.

I'm not sure to what extent this affects flash cards, but I only read from mine, and haven't had a problem when I've just pulled them. I DO try to use the safe removal feature though.

By the way, formatting the cards means format in-camera, not in computer.

I wondered about this too. My new computer has a built in CF card reader. One of my external hard disk drives does too. The computer will only recognize one of these card readers at a time. I have to reboot the system with a card in the reader to get it to work, then as long as I use only that reader, it continues to recognize cards as I change them. This is all being done with the callous rip-er-out technique, but maybe I should be a little more sensitive to my OS's needs.

As long as you are reading the CF Card, I do not see a problem. In fact, Windows Explorer doesn't even have an eject if I haven't written to the card. I also have built in card readers. I was disappointed with the CF, as that is the only one I used. I finally disconnected the readers by pulling the cables. Strangely, this took care of the hard drive errors I was getting.

When you write to teh card, like to update the camera firmware, I would advise going through the proper routine, either through WE or the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the lower left of the screen.

If you have a Mac, ignore all this.I have no idea what hoops Jobs makes you leap through.
