We're coming up on one of my favorite times of the year. Right around now I start getting antsy as I think about all the places I'm traveling to, photographing and exploring throughout the year. Spring is right around the corner despite the fact that fresh snow is covering the ground outside my office. I thought it would be fun to see where everyone is headed to this year. I'll start:

We leave for Phoenix in a couple weeks. Probably too early for even the earliest wildflowers but we'll certainly spend a lot of time hiking in the warmer weather. March I'm spending 3 days on the White Rim Trail. June we're headed to the Tetons, July and August we'll be in Glacier NP and September/October in the San Juans. Lots of little weekend trips mixed in throughout the year and a few unplanned escapes thrown in for good measure. I've got road trip fever!

What are your plans for the year?

I can totally relate, since I usually take the winter "off" cause I hate freezing. I Just put in for a bunch of time off and so Far I know I will be in Utah mid April -- I'm either going back to the white rim myself, or possibly chesler park. I've been taking about hitting the Winds in late July/ early August with another member, if that doesn't work out it will be Ice Lake or Wetterhorn. I'll be in California in the Fall, probably stopping at some scenic places like Sequoia. I might also shoot up to the Tetons for a couple days in the Fall. Also planning lots of short trips to the front range areas I've neglected for so long...

I just returned from a 3 week journey to Laos, and at the rate I'm going I'll still be 'developing' images 'til Spring. :frown:
I also take the winter "off" (esp. this one!) and am getting 'road fever'. I'm looking forward to visiting many new discoveries in the Navajo Nation lands of N.E. Arizona & N.W. New Mexico, Virginia Park in the Needles area of Canyonlands and the Maze.

Let's see some OT shots, John!
Bret, I hope to go to the Redwoods in summer, and the Narrows in the fall. We'll see.

My big trip this summer will be a trip to ANWR in Alaska.
Posted by Amy Lindsey on February 6, 2010 at 9:20 PM
Pacific NW in late May, Gettysburg in April and June, Acadia NP in July, and hopefully Tetons/Yellowstone in fall.
Posted by Bret Edge on February 6, 2010 at 9:27 PM
Oooooh, Steve...I'm envious of your ANWR trip. Can't wait to see some photos upon your return.

John: Why in the heck haven't we seen at least a teaser photo from your trip to Laos? Get crackin', dude!

Sounds like the forum is going to be full of awesome photos from all these trips mentioned so far! :toast:

Once upon a time I used to make lists during winter of all the places I was going to go the following summer. I'd get to a couple of them, and end up at a lot of places that never made the list. So I stopped planning. Except for a few notable workshops with a certain dude from Moab, I'm keeping my options pretty open this year. But I hope to be out at least three days a week every week.

Thinking seriouslly about the Page, Escalante area this spring and the San Jauns in the fall.
Fortunately, there is another fall season for me in Ozarks right on the heels of the one in Colorado.

Whoa....Phoenix in March, Bisti in April, Yellowstone in May....I may have to take the summer off to rest up. Road trip fever is a terrible thing.

Let's see Laos! I too am thinking of a March trip to Arizona. I'll try and keep making trips to southwestern New Mexico throughout the year; hopefully a couple quite soon while it's snowier than it's been in years. In summer, I'm hoping for more time on Idaho rivers and in the Idaho backcountry, probably at least a couple trips in Dinosaur as well. I also really want to spend more time in the Pecos Wilderness this year. And I'll be looking at some kind of fall color trip, maybe to the Great Basin. I had a fantastic October week in Nevada mountains years ago, but my photo skills had yet to hit their stride. But I'm sure my plans will change.

Mostly Colorado, but will be trying for Hawaii and New Zealand as side trips.
Posted by Rick Dunn on February 7, 2010 at 9:30 AM
New Zealand as a 'side' trip? That's the good life right there!

We have to be flexible to accommodate work travel. Late spring will either be redwoods along the Oregon/CA coast, or a trip to N. Cascades Nat'l Park. Summer will be the Beartooths or the Frank Church Wilderness in Idaho. September will be a trip to Europe - Belgium, Paris, Burgundy and Switzerland. We'll sprinkle in long weekends in the Alvord Desert, Mt. Ranier and St. Helens.

I am planning on going to Moab at the end of March but my big trip for the year will be 11 days in Alaska in June. Not sure where I am going yet but I am sure I will be shooting the entire time I am there.

For local flare, I will be heading to Moab in March, Yellowstone in May, RMNP in June, San Juans in July, Mt. Evans in August and San Juans in September/October. I will be also going to Bora Bora in May and a cruise to the Eastern Caribbean in July/August.

Good to hear about the snow outside your window, Bret. I'm hoping to head to Moab tomorrow if the weather permits for some wintry shooting (will email you). I've only got trips planned through the spring and they involve Page and the Sonoran Desert in March, Sedona in April and White Sands in May. After that, we'll see.

Wow, a lot of travel plans for a lot of folks here. I will be happy to have a job this year and will be staying in CO the way it appears. Maybe I will luck out and have travel forced upon me near a neat location like last October.

I spend a least a month or two in the Yellowstone/Teton areas throughout the year. Looking at Oregon in early June if things work out. A possible trip to the North East for the fall color in October. Side trips to the Moab area and of course RMNP. Also planning a short trip to South Dakota and Cody to photograph horses.
Posted by Dean Sauskojus on February 7, 2010 at 11:15 PM
I'll be in the Yellowstone Ecosystem somewhere. Hope to maybe run into a few of you guys.
Posted by Bret Edge on February 7, 2010 at 11:30 PM
Man, there are some awesome places being visited by the RMNP crew this year. Sure wish I could take a "side trip" to New Zealand some time. ;-)

We'll be going to Tucson at the end of March for our annual spring training/photo trip, and then spending a couple of days in Albuquerque on the way back to catch some more baseball and photography. We usually go to Tucson at the end of February and early March, but since this is the last year for spring training in Tucson, we wanted to catch the last Rockies game there. Hopefully the later trip will have us there for some wildflowers in the desert.

In September we're going to Ireland for 9 or 10 days, and I'll be doing some shooting in an environment I'm totally unaccustomed to.

In between I hope to make a trip or two down to the 4 Corners or the Page area. But, I've been scouting some places around here to shoot, too... All I know is that spring can't get here soon enough!

I'll be spending five days with Darwin Wiggett and five others in the Canadian Rockies of Banff and Jasper National Parks, and then will spend the another nine days exploring that area on my own. However, I've got another 2 to 3 weeks of vacation to use up this year and I have yet to formulate some plans for that. Hmmmmm.

I'm looking forward to spending the summer mostly backpacking in the San Juans and Elk Range, and hanging out in Ouray (new rooftop brewery going in in June!)

I'd also like to hopefully make a road trip to the Winds and maybe the Sawtooths at some point.

I'm pondering a trip to Peru in May... not sure about that though.

It's really interesting to read about everyone's upcoming travel plans. It gives me new ideas on places that I may not have thought of visiting myself.

Usually by March I have all my vacation time planned out. This year I want to keep some time unscheduled and see what comes up. Bret, your Moab workshops sound very interesting! I see you added a few more since the last time I looked.

The only trip I have definite plans for is Maine in mid June. Looking forward to some good lobster!

Posted by Bret Edge on February 9, 2010 at 12:16 AM
Jack: Peru sure would be cool! Can't wait to see your photos if you do make the trip.

Laurie: I've always wanted to visit Maine. One of these days I'll get over there for fall colors. Yep, I just added a whole bunch of workshops for 2010. It's going to be a fun year!

Seems like everyone is coming to the Sonoran Desert for spring

We've had a TON of rain in the last few weeks - the wildflower bloom *could* be spectacular.

Awesome thread guys! It's really cool to learn of everyone's plans and hope to run into some of you along the trail

Let's see: thinking of dunes this weekend (maybe making it a valentine's day tradition since I did that last year too), shooting lime green aspens around Ridgeway this spring, Memorial Day week in Adirondacks and Finger Lakes region of New York, Late July backpacking Olympic NP followed by a quik trip for some wildflowers in San Juans, Wind River in August, Tetons in the fall and back to CO for some quick fall color in San Juan.

It's going to be a fun year!
