Well....the good news is, I just received my new D300s yesterday to go with my D60. Great camera and it has all the extras I was looking for in my landscape work. Now the bad news. I did install the NEF/RAW codec from the Nikon site and this may be causing the problem. I have taken a few images with the new toy just to check it out and I am shooting camera Raw as always. When they go to Nikon Transfer they load right in as usual but when I start the transfer to Photoshop, I get an error message that Photoshop can't open the files because they are the wrong type. I tried switching to jpeg in the camera and still get the error message. I can view and modify my older jpegs and tiffs but it doesn't like the NEF files anymore!! I also tried the D60 and just shot some jpegs. Same problem with the error message. If anyone has an idea of what is going on here I could sure use some help right now.

Is your version of Adobe Camera Raw updated to v 5.5 ?
That version will read D300s RAW files.

I echo John's comments - you can always download the DNG converter and convert everything from NEF to DNG which some people believe should be done regardless because in theory it is a more stable file format since it's Adobe instead of Nikon

Well it open source, which means it should be more supportable by many programs, but I wouldn't say it's more stable, having already been re-defined several times (but always backward compatible). There are plusses and minuses to converting to DNG, especially if you use your camera makers software. I'd just make sure I had the most up to date CS4 and ACR that I could, and I think you should be OK.

You don't say what OS you are using wether it is 32bit or 64bit.
I run win 7 64bit the NEF codec from Nikon does not suppurt 64bit. I set my nikon transfer to open bridge after it has downloaded the files and then do everything from Bridge select the files I want to work on in camera raw and photoshop. Just a thought for you to try
I run win 7 64bit the NEF codec from Nikon does not support 64bit
I have Win 7/64 bit, I can download NEF raw files to either Bridge or Lightroom. Never had a problem. I use the CF card slot to download directly to my hard drive. Where in that process is the lack of support?

The NEF codec is used to let windows preview the NEF files in windows explorer and other windows apps. It doesn't affect Lightroom or Bridge, and has nothing to do with simply having the files on your computer. So in your case, there is no lack of support. However, you mentioned that you installed it, so you should realize that it won't work properly in 64-bit Win 7.

Thanks everyone for the support. Since this problem came about at the same time as my new camera purchase; I wrongly assumed it was a problem with communication between the camera and PS4. I have since updated my ACR to 5.6 and the problem is solved. It did take awhile for my old, slow brain to figure it out but I'm glad it still works somewhat!!

Thanks for correcting my symentics. I should not have used "stable" but instead should have indicated that in the future, if Nikon were to somehow fall off the face of the earth, it would be best to have your files in DNG vs. NEF. Glad you were able to solve the problem!
