Anybody else having this problem?
I've been noticing for quite some time that Safari will often lock up when trying to load NPN, and I need to Force Quit and relaunch Safari. I'm posting this question from FireFox which works at NPN but isn't nearly as nice of a user experience on my Mac IMO.
This happens on both my PowerMac G4 and my PowerBook G4 computers, both running OS X 10.4.11 with all updates. It happens over dial up from home, and via wifi from wherever I can find it.
It doesn't happen every time I load NPN, but often enough to be really annoying.
I'm running Safari Version 4.0.4 (4531.21.10) - the latest.
If it matters I go directly to the Avian Gallery from both browsers.

I see it once in a great while, Richard, but not as often as you report. Have you tried dumping the cache? The other thing you might do is turn on Developer mode (Preferences > Advanced > Developer checkbox), and then look at the error logs.

Rich
Safari has frozen up on me a few times too while on NPN, but nothing like you wrote about.
Hello Richard,
Try going into the utilities folder in the applications folder.
Select the "Disk Utility" and open it. depending on how many drives you have select the boot drive on the left side. Then select "repair disk permissions" and hopefully that will take care of the problem. If you have multiple drives, I'd do them all. I do this on a fairly regular basis on all my machines.
Good Luck
Neil

I've never had that problem in 3 years on this site using 2 different laptops and two different desktop Mac's - all running Safari.

That's a new problem to me Richard. I'm also using version 4.0.4 but haven't had any difficulties with getting into NPN.

I've never had that problem occur. I'm running Safari Version 4.0.4 (5531.21.10) on a Mac Pro and on a Macbook Pro both running OS X V 10.5.8

I usually have a short lived (few seconds) beach ball upon loading NPN the first time after starting Safari (from then on NPN loads fine until the next time I close my browser). I say its short lived, but something like that (if its dependent upon download time) could seem like an eternity on a dial up.

Thanks, everyone, for the replies.
Jim: I've had the Developer mode on since before going to version 4. It doesn't get me to any log. I'd use it to "Show Error Console" but when Safari freezes so do all the pulldown menus. But I'll look to see if I can get to a crash log for Safari from terminal or something to see if there's anything in thee I can understand. I've cleared the cache a few times before with no obvious fix to the freeze-up, but I'll try that again to see.
Neil: ok - hadn't done that in a while, and it caught a couple from the latest iTunes update. We'll see if that helps.
Greg: Yes, the spinning ball. That's what I get and no matter how long I wait it won't load the page and I need to Force Quit as Safari is reported as not responding. Perhaps we both just need more RAM.
