Hello,
I have a Canon EOS 1D Mark 11 with 400mm 2.8 IS.
Now the new Canon Mark IV is available i doubt between new gear.
So what do you say, Canon Eos 1D mark IV or the new Nikon D3S
Thank you for participation

Is money an issue? Do you want to keep the 400/2.8?

Money is no issue en i dont need to keep the Canon 400mm 2.8, thank you for this reaction.

Well since money is no issue, keep the 400 2.8, buy the Mark IV, AND buy the D3S with a new Nikon 400, 500 or 600.

Since you didn't say what your goals are, it's a bit hard to give any meaningful advice. Do you really think your photography will improve because you switch camera systems??

No thats not the problem, improve the photography, i need another camera and there are some people who advise to switch over to Nikon, so i realy dont have a idea if canon or nikon is better, so thats the reason i post this, and would like to know whhat you all think about this.

Well in those very general terms, there's no meaningful difference between them. Right now, a lot of folks think the D3S is a bit better than the Mark IV. And Canon has, of course, had focus tracking issues/quality issues - particularly with the MkIII. But just a couple of years ago, Canon seemed to be way ahead of Nikon. It's likely to switch again at some point.

Overall, they're both fantastic systems, as you can tell by the number of outstanding pros shooting with both. Unless you can pin point specific things that you're unhappy with in your current system, or that you think Nikon would do for you that Canon won't, I wouldn't bother switching; So I'd get the MkIV and keep whatever camera you currently have as a back up.

(Note, I've never shot with either of these high end cameras, just for full disclosure.)

Keep in mind, one doesn't buy a camera but a system.

I just upgraded to the Mark 4 from the Mark 2 and love it. AF is super and images are outstanding. I am sure Nikon bodies are also good, but I have too much invested in Canon lenses to even consider switching.

Marinus,

With the huge advancements in digital photography gears in recent years, I think any pro camera will do more than you need in any photography situation. Releasing new body after another is a game between companies that we shouldn't go too much into.

I agree with others, that it is important to take into account that it is system based more than single camera.
Also, I agree sometimes that one wants to own the best for many reasons...(myself included BTW). For me "best" means image quality and if that means the same to you, I recommend that you take a look at Dxo camera rating which rank camera based on its RAW capture and it is updated frequently.

Good luck!

I shoot Nikon, so I will recommend the Nikon. Frankly, I wish I had your "problem."

Thank you all for the respons, i have made a choice, and have buy a complete new set of Nikon; Nikon D3X and several lenses, not all Nikon, for example the macro is from CarlZeiss, wich is much better than the one of Nikon.
Further i shoot with The Hasselblad H3DII, also a great camera and perfect detail without noise.
Again, thank you all.

Best to you,
