Jay/Greater Spotted Woodpecker
Plenty of nits in this one but it all happened so qhickly it caught me on the hop. I was lined up on redpolls when this happened way over to the left and at three times the distance.
Wrong lens, wrong aperture, wrong position, and a big crop etc.
The background is about as messy as you can get so I,ve tried to soften the detail out. Good behaviour shot I suppose.
My mate Marmite (Jay) came off best by the way!

Sometimes the best shots come when we are not ready, for me this is a brillant image of bird behaviour with both giving no ground through hunger/cold conditons. So forget the nits when you capture natrual behaviour as you have done here John, works a treat for me

Superb behavioural image John, the bg looks good to me and there seems to be plenty of detail despite the crop. The snow is an added bonus, nice one!
Cheers,
Lewis.

Hi John
You covered all the nits but they aren't worth mentioning with action like this - I love the pose of the Jay!

John
Works every time this is nature at work. What nits?
Considering you were caught on the hop I think you have captured this really well. I love Marmite, hes just full of character.

I think this is excellent John. The birds pop very nicely from a background which I do not find troubling at all.

ps wish my mistakes were as good as this

Thanks every body.
This one is the last one I got and the only one with the camera horizontal. Just after this the Woody took off.
Thanks again.

I wish al my pictures are that bad.
I like the first one most because the jay's neckfeathers are standing up.
Great shot John.

Two stunning shots John, absolutely brilliant timing. Can't make up my mind between them but they are absolute winners. You should send them to the papers!!!!

Well , - thanks every one. I am really surprised at the interest in what I thought was a mediocre picture.
