Has anyone seen this combo. I could've sworn I saw it advertised somewhere, but can't remember where. If you've seen or used it I would love to hear what you think. Thanks

Thanks for the response Scott, I usually use a full size tripod too, but we are hiking the grand canyon, and trying to reduce weight anywhere I can. I've always hand carried my tripod, but trying to figure out how to incorporate trekking poles for my 50 year old knees. thanks again. Jeff

Jeff,
I've used that REI hiking staff/monopod. It's better as a hiking staff than as a monopod, at least on a DSLR. A little too wobbly for my tastes. For weight savings, low-cost, and ease of use I suggest an Ultrapod II.

Hey Michael, the ultrapod might be a good alternative to the full size tripod. Thanks for the suggestion.

Jeff, you are welcome. REI sells the Ultrapod II cheaper than anyone somehow. I have one in every camera bag. I can get steady shots using it on lighter, wider angle lenses. For closeups using a longer (90mm-125mm) macro lens, it requires more body control. Image stabilization also helps.

Out of curiosity, I did a quick search for a trekking pole/monopod, and found this:

Update: Decided to go with the Black Diamond trekking poles (in honor of my old knees) probably purchase the Go Pod II. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Combo walking sticks and shooting support. Have excellent reviews from hunters, trekkers and photnuts http://www.stoneypoint.com/products/mp_expedition_lite.html
