I tried their low cost program (not the "pro") account. It won't back up any external drive and it is incredibly slow. I decided not to use them but I haven't found anything else that might be in my budget.

Carbonite? Isn't that what Jabba the Hutt froze Han Solo in?

It's great if you are backing up small Word docs & Excel spreadsheets. Because we usually deal in very large files and lots of them, it takes forever to get them to the remote server. Remember that in 99% of all Internet connections, the upload speed is only about 15-20% of the download speed, so it's painful to try to get lots of large files uploaded.

I use Mozy, which is similar to carbonite.

I had 2 hard drives fail last year, so I'm extra careful about my backup strategy now, and this is one more level of backup I added this year and I think it's a good one. I only back up my important photo files, and it did take a couple weeks of constant uploading to do the initial backup. I'm using verizon fios which has very high upload speeds as well. Once you get the initial backup on the server the software only uploads files that are new or have been changed.

I still backup to external hard drivesl, but having an offsite backup is very important as well.

Hi Larry,

I use Mozy (mozy.com). I too tried carbonite and found out it would not back up external drives, Mozy does.

It took 2-3 weeks to backup my image files presently around 170GB, sure that's not super fast, but now all new files or changed files get backed up within 24 hrs. So after the initial wait to get everything backed up it's great.

I use it as my 2nd line of backup. My working image drive is an external usb, which is what I have mozy backup. I then back that external drive myself to a 2nd external. So at any given time I have images in 3 different locations, one being off site at mozy. I have very pleased with mozy and pay $4.95 a month. I really can't believe more photographers don't use an off line backup service, it's like its tailor made for us.

I use carbonite and love it...although I did not realize that it does not back up external hard drives....

I have had 3 externals fail in 2 years! One was the replacement for one of the failed ones!

I signed up for carbonite. Lightening struck too close and took out my surge protector and my computer. When I got a new computer....I got a terrabyte of memory. Well, this was the big moment to "test" carbonite.

I logged onto the site and clicked to download all my photo and word files. It took 4 days, but I got back EVERY photo!!!!!!!!

Very pleased. Although, if I get another external, it sounds like I will be switching to Mozy, unless carbonite includes external backups by then.
