After my third try at getting good eagle in the winter shots at Starved Rock SP, in Illinois and coming up with very little, (this year there was no ice on the Illinois River and few eagles the day I visited,) I am looking for suggestions on where else in this region would be good for winter eagle photography?
John not sure how much travell you want or can do but LeClaire, IA would be a decent place it is further than Starved Rock for you. This has not been a great year, there are eagles around but they are harder to get in touch with. Check out http://www.mvr.usace.army.mil/missriver/Eagle%20Watching/Eagle%20Main.htm
will give you an idea. If you had the time you could come
west from Peoria on Rt 116 you will end up just East of Lock & Dam 18 then you can go up river to Lock & Dam 14 at Leclare. Some where between the two you should find a spot. (I live just South of L&D18. You could then circle back on 80 and catch SRSP on the way home. Normaly you should have a good day anywhere along the river between the locks. This year a day is good one place and another some where else you just have to find them. If you get this way E-mail me and I can give you a couple other ideas where they may be.

Monticello, MN (on the Mississippi, right of I94) has a lot of eagles and hundreds of trumpeter swans (and geese, ducks, etc.). The river is open here year round due to the power plant upstream, so they stick around all year.

Thank you for the info. Unfortunately at this time I am limited to day trips (other commitments) but, I will try to get to one of these places before the eagles spread out.

Last Monday was a foggy, frosty day, but I still got a few decent ones:

Sadly, I didn't catch the eagles well:
