So now and then I like to work with captive animals. Why? Because I will get some shots which I will never get in the wild. Simple as that. Of course there's no thrill or real excitement but seeing a male merlin this close is beautiful. The most cracking of all falcons if you ask me.
Stunning detail Edwin. Nice mush in the foreground and beautiful background. A perfect portrait I would say. I agree with you about captive birds/animals.

A beautiful shot, Edwin. The sort of thing we dream about getting in the wild, but in reality most of us will only ever get captive shots. This is a particularly fine example.

Beautiful image, stunning - but I don't like captive birds. I agree though - I would never see one that close otherwise
Lovely shot and a background that suits perfectly. I'm not a one for captive images but I live next to moorland and have never been very close to a Merlin, so I can appreciate this is the only realistic way to get a shot.

beautiful image, colour of the background complements the back perfectly and the perch is excellent too

All been said - stunning shot, nice pose and good detail. Agree with David's comments about captive bird shots.

Lovely shot Edwin, which really shows the beauty of this little fella. I think I was shooting the same bird just a day or two before you as I think Pete may have employed the same falconer!
Personally, I think well-cared for captive birds serve a valuable role in that they make 'wildlife' accessible to the casual observer, who might then choose to go on and 'go wild'
