NANPA Impressions
Just returned from NANPA in Sparks, NV, an outstanding meeting for me that I almost didn't attend. I waffled before going and got more out of this one than either Denver or Albuquerque last year. Steve Weaver, Ken Wyatt and Russ Wood were the other local photographers and Ken should be posting a pic of the RMNP contingent. It was great to see Steve and Ken there and a number of presentations really stand out:

Staffan Widstrand of Sweden presented Wild Wonders of Europe and whoa! That was powerful. 69 photographers, in 28 countries over 14 months, reaching virtually the entire European population.

Cristina Mittermer of ILCP showed a video that was very inspiring - dedicated conservation photographers working all over the world.

Joel Sartore's (NG photographer) keynote was an emotional roller coaster and the talk was one I'll never forget.

Phil Borges' work for human rights over most of his lifetime. Awesome!

Video is here to stay and marching forward quickly. We'll all be shooting video sooner than we think. Multimedia is present and powerful in every presentation.

It was great to see NANPA take a position that they'll no longer run ads for game farms. They are now encouraging members to photograph wild animals in a responsible manner. A big step forward and not anti-zoo.

The attached image was sot from my room with a G10, bouncing off the walls in my casino room on day 3.

That's fantastic! As for the photo, I must say, I really enjoyed the '70s, what I can remember of them.

Thanks for the update Dave. I was a founding member of NANPA it sure has blossomed into a large organization. Do you know how many attendees there were?

Thanks for the report, Dave, Wish I could have made it! Did you drive or fly? Any nature areas around Reno needing to be revisited?

431 attendees, pretty good considering the poopy economy. I flew, and both Steve and Ken drove. They were both stoked about different shooting opps. on their journeys and I'm sure you'll be seeing images soon. I met with the local Lahontan Audubon folks at the meeting. They were very helpful - gave me a birding book and marked up a map for me. I have future extensive work to do in the Great Basin and am psyched for getting out in the Basin and Range. Steve Weaver knows it well, as he has studied every rock out there. Had I drove, it's unlikely that I would have posted a psychadelic urban image.
