Sandhill cranes taking off after getting free from the ice. Looks like there is some slipping and sliding while they are getting up to flight speed.

Where was your shot taken? Are the one's in the back still stuck in the ice? What a miserable situation!

Daniel, It was taken at a pond near Bosque del Apache NWR south of Socorro, NM. Some of the ones in the back are still iced in, others are waiting for there mate to get free I imagine. Evidently it does not bother the cranes very much, they roost on this pond every night.
Birds on ice are funny. I got a good laugh at the geese and ducks here in Conway during our cold spell in January. It is like they don't know how to land on ice, they were being extra careful.

Thanks Matthew and Gale.
Yes, we had a great trip to Bosque. Cold, some snow, some sunny but cold days and lots of wildlife. Elk, deer, eagles, cranes, RWBB, snow geese and other species. The snow capped peaks were nice too.
