I am heading to Death Valley tomorrow and have been hearing about some road issues due to all of the recent rain. Has anyone been out there recently? I have noticed a lot of road closures on their website, is it really that bad?
Martin, this link maybe of help if you have not seen it. It's dated as of today. DVNP Road Info.

I was there a couple of weeks ago. The roads in and out were all open, but many of the roads to "side sites" were closed: Dante's view closed due to snow, Salt Creek closed due to mud, etc., etc. The snow closure sites probably are still closed, the mud closure sites are anybody's guess. The link above is great.
Thanks for the link and I was actually on that site reading about all of the road closures that brought about my question. I have been there once when it rained but this year is obviously more severe.

The lake water is so close to the badwater road just south of the parking area.
There might be some rain on Saturday, who knows what it will do. It can close a road or two. Make a list of plan B's. I was there a week ago and wanted to visit the Keane Spring and the rangers said it was closed because cyanide was seeping out of the ground.

Many of the unpaved 4x4 roads have iron gates, so closed means closed then. Also a lot of the back roads have passes which may mean steep grade you don't want to do in snow. What I say doesn't apply to main things listed in the NP visitor's guides. Even unpaved if open are relatively easy to drive, at worst washboard and some rocks.
I would trust the authorities to know not to open sites that would get damaged or get you in trouble. Furthermore, I'd check if it's OK before going into canyons for flood risks. That said wet or snowy rock is gorgeous. Especially when it's marbled and polished. Look for the canyons that are close to the road, near devil's golf course, stovepipes, etc. Those likely aren't risky unless it rains very hard.
Martin, I've been in DVNP during an all night down pour, the next morning was not a good site to see. Many roads were washed out along with one of the main campsite areas as well. With this newest storm this weekend I suspect the closures will remain. Good luck if you get a chance to make the trip.

I was there two weekends ago. It's easier to say what was open, rather than closed. Natural Bridge was open. Mosaic Canyon, Badwater and the west road leading to the mouth of Titus was open. Also Zabriskie point was open. The sand dunes were open. Pretty much everything else was closed.
