Just got a new Nikon D300s and took about 700 RAW files at an orchid show today.
So I download the good images into my computer, and try to open them as usual with CS3 .
CS3 laughs and says with every file "Cannot complete request becuase this is not the right kind of document".
The images open fine in Breezebrowser.
Anyone have any ideas?
PS: CS3 still opens all the other RAW files from the D300. Did I screw up some setting of the new 300s ??
Sandy, apparently CS3 doesn't support the RAW files from the D300s because it must be a camera that was released after CS3. The easiest thing to do would be to upgrade to CS4, or otherwise the options that Floris gave above.
Have you tried simply updating your CS3 (and camera raw) using its update feature? I recently ran into a similar problem after I installed cs3 on a new computer and received that error with every one of my raw files. After updating my CS3 the files opened fine. Although the initially installed version of CS3 should have opened the raw files, I'm guessing I ran into that problem because my camera was made after cs3.
Checklist of what may help: Go to Adobe.com and download the Raw converter for your new camera. I always open my raw files thru Bridge. But first make sure to go under Bridge Preferences> File Type Associations: and Check that your camera’s Raw file format (Nikon=NEF) is set to open in Adobe Photoshop CS3 (under the pull down arrow). Then just double clicking on your files will open them in ACR.

Greg - That will work if you're camera came out before CS4 became the only supported version. Once that happened, all newer cameras (including the D300s) were no longer supported in CS3.
And Floris - it IS a money making ploy, but no more so than simply coming out with new versions that aren't free upgrades. Continuing to support CS3, CS2, CS, 7, 6, etc. for RAW conversion once they have a newer version out isn't trivial.
You might want to try downloading a trial version of editing software that does not hiccup when you open D300s files. Capture One Pro from Phase One, and Digital Light and Color's Picture Window Pro come to mind. I think they both have fully functional but time-stamped trials. One cannot have enough tools in the toolbox. The trial versions will give you a few weeks to make up your mind as to how you will proceed. I use Capture One exclusively for raw conversion - the workflow is extremely fast and the output is as close to Nikon's Capture NX2 as you are likely to find.
I just got a D300s in December. With the supplied software, it does convert a RAW into a TIFF file. I have a Mac and I downloaded "Raw Photo Processor" which I like a lot (then paid the creator 20 bucks). When I open it in RPP I eliminate all auto settings (contrast, sharpening, etc.) and set the White Balance to "As Shot". Then I do a Save As into jpg or tiff or whatever.
I use CS4 and bridge but I had to update Adobe Camera Raw.
I don't even remember how I did the update. I just went to Adobe and floundered around until I found something...That's the way I solve a lot of my computer problems (floundering). That's also the way I create a lot of my computer problems.
Well, I see I'm late to the catastrophe. You've already been well rescued. Congrats on the 300s. How come not the 700? Have to do with video? I'd like to know what you think of that feature.

Oh, I hate to do this to you. The way I update Photoshop is to open Bridge. On the top line all the way over to the right, there is a tab marked "HELP". Select this and you will get a drop down menu. In the list of options is one called, "Updates....". Yes, the periods are there, but please don't ask me why. Select this and it will update all the CS4 files as well as Adobe Reader.
For once Adobe made it easy and didn't give you a hundred different way to get lost in the process. But, you do need to know where to look.

OR... you can convert the RAWs to tiffs with another utility, and open the tiffs in PS.
OR... you can update your adobe DNG converter, and convert the RAW files to DNG, then ACR shouldn't complain.
It's just a ploy to get your money.
