#1 - Burrowing Owl
Canon 1Ds2, EOS 70-200 f/4 IS, 192mm, f/7.1, 1/250 sec, ISO 400
I was about to delete these two images, but after zooming in on the eyes, I found some massively cropped compositions that I liked. At 900 x 700 pixels I won't be looking forward to any prints, but I thought they were worth sharing.
These birds were brought to Bosque del Apache as part of an educational program by a New Mexico raptor rehab center. The staff was holding the birds. The backgrounds were poor, at best, so I just took some grab shots for the record.
Now I kick myself for not moving in closer, instead of the full bird + trainer compositions that I grabbed. The thought just never crossed my mind. Oh well, next time I get this close to a burrowing owl, I'll get those eyeballs !!!
I certainly have no complaints about the sharpness of that 70-200mm f/4 IS. Both shots were hand held.
So glad you didn't erase these outstanding images. Love, love, love the close-up details. My own lens options encourage the more intimate portrait style but the opportunities are not as abundant. What an opportunity you had. Thank you for sharing.
All are great shots! Not sure why your frowning :)

Thanks for the positive feedback, everyone.
Lynn, a 900 x700 pixel crop will make a great ~4"x3" print at 250ppi. I prefer to start at 16"x20".
The extreme closeup just never crossed my mind in that captive setting, but I will certainly remember the lesson - if you think you are close enough, get closer!

I'm amazed by the delicate feathers and coloration around the beak. I hadn't even noticed these until zooming in!
The detail present is simply stunning.
