Well, I spoke with my boss today and I will be providing several photos to him free of charge. Some of you are probably shaking your head right now, but here are the details.

Turns out for THIS book, he is getting photos from a wide range of photographers, all for free. He offered me full credit and a write-up (and in no way was pressuring me to agree to this). My boss has put me in contact with an editor at the ABA which resulted in landing the cover of "Winging It" as well as some local "birding" connections. I know there is a "risk" involved with doing this, but at this point I think it's the right move for me.

As for concerns about the future relationship with my boss as the result of this, I am a civil-servant so moving up the ladder in the workplace and pay raises etc. are more or less out of his hands which should ease any tensions that could present themselves.

Thanks to all for your advice, it is invaluable and I'd be lost without it.

With the genuine prospects for other business resulting, that isn't all that bad Luke. In fact, you might be getting a better "deal" than the other photogs who contributed.

The part that bugs me is if this book was being published pre digital days, there is no way he would have gotten all the photos free.

Rodney,

That's true - but I wouldn't have a lot of the photos I have if we were still in the film era. In fact, I probably wouldn't be taking pictures in the film era. I photograph first and foremost for personal enjoyment, so anything else is sort of icing on the cake. Will my opinion change over time? Probably. For me, there is no sense in looking back into another era.
