Been waiting all winter for a good op to shoot the ice at Dream Lake. Finally got there yesterday morn, Steve Peckham also showed up a bit after sunrise. Thanks to Erik for some good tips on best time etc to shoot. Here's 1.
Steven, yep i ignored Erik's sugeestion and went with the reflections I just feel they add another dimension to the shot (especially in my ESS post) although thats just personal preference and im sure others would prefer it without the strong reflections.
Some great shots from Dream Lake. It's a place I've always wanted to go for some ice shots.

Once upon a time I wanted ice shots like this, too, until everybody and his brother got them. After Doerzman did it so effectively, and Erik after him, and on and on, what else is there to say? They all start looking very, very similar. The fact that 99.9% of the shots are even of the same lake only adds to the herd-like aspects of the concept. Is there no other lake in Colorado where the wind sweeps its surface clear of snow?
Please understand, I think the shots are beautiful, Mr. Stan. I just think the whole cracks-and-bubbles-in-blue-ice theme has long ago run its course. I've seen more variety from a dozen photographers standing on the shore of Maroon Lake on the same morning than all the blue ice shots put together. I know we all, me included, follow in the artistic footsteps of others, but this whole blue ice thing just takes it to a whole 'nother level.
Sorry in advance if I've offended anyone reading this. I'm just being honest, and it's only MY opinion.

#1 and #6 are classic. I especially like the large version of your ES&S post.

I'm partial to number 2 - the rock and the ice. Guess my thing is reality based and the rock does it for me. Brrr that is cold.

Todd, you are too funny... Those are almost the exact words out of my wife's mouth earlier this year when I came home with yet more ice pictures. However, from outside our photographer's community I have seen a lot of great reactions towards these Dream Ice Pictures.
I think that Stan, you did a great job on the subject. I have always avoided the rocks because I couldn't make them look interesting.
Lol, thanks Todd--i totally understand you. The only reason i shot the ice is because i hadn't done it before and to me it would be like not shooting Maroon Bells when you are into photography. That being said, i think every ice shot there is different because there is infinite variety. I also think my ESS shot is slightly different because its a huge stitch and i havent seen that in the many other examples that you refer to. I also held back a shot that i will probably post in a week or so that is a different looking abstract than any of the others---so there!!
Josh--I was only in the park that day in bear lake area. You should have nice weather, the snowpack up there is a bit sparse especially at the lower elevations.
