My First Digital Shots

Well, I finally decided to join the 21st century . Not only did I upgrade from PhotoShop 4 to CS2 last year, but I also purchased an EOS 5D this January (I may even trade in my horse and buggy for one of those new-fangled automobiles, but I'm not yet sure if those polluting hunks of metal are just a passing fad or are here to stay).

I had my first chance to use my camera on my way to and fro California. Here's a link to a few of those shots:

This was my first effort at optimizing images from RAW files, so if you have feedback on anything I might improve, I'd appreciate it.

I think you've got an incurable problem with that camera and need to hand it over to me.

Seriously, I can't see anything vastly wrong with the images you have up. I'm not sure, but you might have just a smidge too much sharpening - visible in the red-hued slot images along the edge of the shadowed walls, esp. in the first shot.

PS - PhotoShop 4? Your buggy probably post-dates PS4.

PPS - nice images; like the colors on the slots, for some reason really like the image you chose to show in the thread, and never get enough of the roof of that ruin.

How about a little essay on your first impressions of the Canon 5d and your journey
to the dark side?

Okay, Les, my camera's on it's way to you...I'm going back to film :frown:

I would write an essay on the EOS 5D, but after leaving town for four weeks, I'm so swamped with work that for now I'll just say "Me like camera very much."

Hope that suffices .

Grant,

Those are amazing shots. I'm sitting on the fence right now thinking about a Nikon digital body. Thanks for sharing.

Nice stuff there, Grant! So, do you miss scanning? I'm still learning how best to handle RAW files, but it beats sitting in front of the scanner waiting and waiting and waiting...

...and tweaking, and spotting, and tweaking, tweak some more, get frustrated, scan again - wait, wait, wait, tweak, tweak........have I ever mentioned that I hate scanning?
RAW conversion is a cakewalk compared to scanning, unless I'm missing something, which is possible.
BTW, Great shots Grant!

You know what. You might not know this but Chuck detests scanning.

I know i know. It surprises me too.

Just thought you might like to know that.

Hmmmm....I wonder if there's anyone on this forum who LOVES scanning...loves it so much in fact that he may have gone out an purchased his own DRUM scanner. Hmmm...I wonder....

OK, I'll stop with the scanning bit Rich.
Hey, if more people feel the way I do then you ought to do pretty good business!

I, for one, can honestly say that I don't miss scanning. Of course, that's because I'm scanning images right now  . I didn't quite buy enough equipment and memory to shoot exclusively digital this tirp, so it made for a good excuse to use up some of my remaining film. And I still have lots of older transparencies I haven't scanned, so my expensive scanner will remain more than a big paper-weight for some time to come. But the digital images certainly make life easier, and I probably should have made the switch earlier.
