Hey folks, I was perusing the favorites of 2009 post and immediately though of this image. But it isn't really a "nature" image. But it is my favorite of 2009. So I thought I would share it in its own post.

We go to Port Townsend every year for the Wooden Boat Festival.

Here is a gallery of images that Nancy & took at the 2009 Wooden Boat Festival: 2009 WBF

The Festival is an amazing gathering of some truly awesome boats. On the last day they do a parade of boats out in the bay. These 4 wooden craft came together for this image with their sails up and the sweetest most perfect light to accent the sail textures. Look close for the two folks up the main mast on the large sail boat on the right.

I converted this to black and white then did a duotone mix. All this was done in Lightroom.

Canon 5D Mark II
Tamron 200-500mm @ 195mm (I've since sold this lens as it was not sharp enough particularly at 500mm)
1/125 sec @ f/25 ISO 400

Why I was at f/25 for this I've no phreakin clue...! In a "perfect world" I would have been at 1/500 sec (that whole reciprocal thing...) and certainly not at f/25. More like f/8 - f/11....sigh. I was clearly very much in the moment as hundreds of wooden boats sailed by!!

Even with the fubar on the camera settings this image makes me quite happy.

Bizarro camera settings aside (I am soooo guilty of doing that), I dig this image. I think the boats are in great positions and relation to one another. :toast:

I like it, Rick, and I'm sure everything was moving, but for some reason it feels too static to me.

It does look a little static… But I showed one from the Tacoma Tall Ships that showed some action and got dinged for the blur... Anyway, I love tall ships, so this really kills me. Glad you posted it. The largest schooner looks like it could be the Adventuress? Nice mix of types of vessels in view, too, Rick.

I love this image Rick as it brings back fond memories of sailing on San Francisco bay and some of the beautiful wooden boats there. A very appealing composition and love the B/W.

Rick, this is a picture postcard waiting to be sold. Nicely done.

I love the shadows on the sails, the black and white treatment, and how the boats are going this way and that.

The blanketing of sails in the shot works well, and the duotone is very nice.
