A new Beta release of Lightroom 3 is now available.
Download here: http://labs.adobe.com/

Digital Outback Photo has a brief review of features:

Adobe also details what is new in Beta 2:

I prefer not messing with Beta releases. I was hoping LR 3 would be shipping next month, but I doubt that will happen, given this new beta.

So, Nat, can you tell us when your LR 3 book will hit the stores?

I just wish that LR3 would have the same new smart cloning that CS5 will have. If it did then it would be a complete product!

Maybe no LR3 next month, but CS5 is coming late-April. Woohoo!

Hey Bill - Nat's at Photoshop World (aka Kelby-palooza) in Tampa right now so I'll answer for him.

I think Wiley has the final files already and that Nat's Lightroom 3 book will be coming out around the time of the software release or shortly thereafter (to account for any last minute changes in the product).

I think the product launch will be in July but I don't think they've actually set a date yet.

That's the best I can do. If Nat happens to log on hopefully he'll correct any misinformation I've disseminated.

I couldn't agree more (..what's 'Lightroom'? ) That's really good news!

Bill - thanks for posting the update on Beta 2... but I have to agree that for most folks, messing around with the Beta is probably not worth the effort, unless you're just dying to see where things are headed. And as the Beta Read Me states, they have "some more things up their sleeves for the final release". I just hope I have enough time to work that stuff into the book ;-)

CAZ - thanks for helping cover for me while I've been on the road; I regret that my participation here has waned of late. Juggling lots of projects and trips at the same time can be a bit overhwhelming.

Re: dates - my book will be released around the same time as the official Lightroom 3 release. Current expectations optimistically place this within the next couple of months, but I can't be more specific about this due to my NDAs.

I can tell you that the official CS5 product announcement will happen April 12.

Nat, thanks for the response.

There seems to be some ambiguity about the CS5 release date.
April 12th is an "announcement". Will the product ship immediately thereafter?

As stated in the ADBE conference call earlier this week.

"On April 12, we will host an online event to launch CS5, which is on track to ship in major languages late in Q2. "

Their quarters are on a different timeframe, as Q1 ended on 3/5. If it is shipping in late Q2 that would put it towards May.

also...

"You’ll learn a lot more about what’s in the product, pricing and the SKU’s on April 12."

"the major languages which we have traditionally said are English, French, German and Japanese to ship in Q2."

"So just for everybody, again on the call, on the 12th, we will talk a lot more about the features and functionalities of the product, the various product configurations, what we’ve done with pricing. We have some new products which we will factor into the pricing moving forward.

The early feedback has been very positive. And then traditionally, four weeks later or so, you tend to ship the English version followed by the major language versions a few weeks after that. So things are on track as we’ve said. All that is factored into the targets that we provided earlier today."
