White on white
I guess for obvious reasons, I have found myself taking alot of high-key white on white images this winter. It hasn't been deliberate - more of an instinctive reaction to the conditions.

Anyway, this Ptarmigan from a week or so ago in near-perfect mountain weather - tough on the legs but soothing on the soul!

Canon 5dII, 500mm lens, f4 @1/1600.

Very nice indeed.
Some might say the Ptarmigan needs to slighly left in the frame.
But otherwise near perfect.

Yes - I,m one of them.
Certainly would be better to the left in my humble opinion.

Lovely Peter, I personally like the central composition here, makes it a sort of iconic image. :toast: :wavey:

A stunning image but a little too central for me. :toast: :wavey:

Wonderful shot! I have not seen any in flight before and the high key effect works well.

A tricky shot to pull off this well , more to the left as well for me.

a simple but very pleasing image. Minor nit mentioned, but lovely exposure and the simplicity is very attractive.

I actually like the bird where it is; my the reason is simple as it is a study of the bird not the bird and the environment and it is large in the frame, to move it L would feel like a token gesture.

I have also tried this as a BW and it works quite well...

Comp works fine for me. First one I have seen caught this well in flight :toast:

Great flight image, good to see a central comp, Peter! it works for me as it's breaking away from the usual.

Why Bother!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How dare you not compose a FLIGHT SHOT OF A PTARMIGAN, never mind this is one of the hardest birds to photograph in the UK, first you have got to get up there with all your kit in all that bastard stuff we call snow and then you have got to find the bloody things and once you have found one it then decides to fly over to the other side of the corrie to join his mates which you just happen to have walked past 15 bloody minutes before hand and then you have got to get back to the other side of the corrie walking through thigh deep stuff that I call bastard snow and then the little buggers decide that the other side of the corrie is better any way and before you know it all you want to do is lie down and go to sleep in all that bastard snow, so mister CAIRNS for you after all that effort in that Bastard snow to even get a sharpe image of a PTARMIGAN IN FLIGHT is to be commended but as for your compostion we will just have to leave that for the experts, I can't wait to see their PTARMIGAN IN FLIGHT shots they must be F%^&**%$ Brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
