After what seems like an eternity we finally managed to get out and do some photography this weekend and found ourselevs at Slimbridge on Sunday. Conditions were a bit bright at times but I spent quite a bit of time on the antics of the moorhens. Sadly there were no big fights when I was with them so this will have to do.

Canon 40D + 500mm f4L IS 1/1000 @ f6.3 ISO200

Straightened and a bit of cropping to the RHS and bottom. Cloned out a couple of irritating mud spots in the water.

Very nice clear image-lots of detail, The raised foot with the droplets makes the image

Fine shot Duncan, I like how one can see the huge foot of this bird,
comp works fine for me, the brown droplets are a bonus

Clear, sharp and great colours; good droplets too. What more could you ask for (other than the fight of course)?!

They may be common birds, but they can be tricky little wotsits exposure wise. You are bang on the nail here.

I like it. Great detail and as has been mentioned the raised foot and droplets add to the image. You say you cropped some from RHS...I think I would have left a bit more in.

Agree with David your exposure is spot on. Great detail. Love the mud splashes - they really add to the image. :wavey: :toast:

"shame the reflection isn t all there"

An interesting thought as I have a lot of shots of moorhens from the day which do have a full reflection (but not this one) but I actually find them very unbalanced. Somehow a full reflection seems distracting to my eye. The full reflection seemed to work better with some of the duck species where the legs aren't visible.

Hi Duncan :wavey:

lovely shot great exposure and colours :toast:

Only nit for me is the slight sharpening halo around the bird, easily sorted.

Excellent POV and great timing to catch the droplets. The red above the beak really stands out.
Well done indeed.
