After an amazing trip last year to Colorado, my friends and I are headed back for another photo trip this September. We are going to be visiting Silver Thread Byway and Ridgeway to Telluride and Durango.

First, if anyone has some suggestions on the time you spend driving Silver Thread and/or Telluride from Ridgeway with frequent photography stops I would appreciate it.

Secondly, does anyone have some favorite things in this region they wouldn't miss?

Thanks all!

Also if anyone knows of a class 1 or 2 rafting tour for the jittery at heart (we will mostly be south of 70 and west of Gunnison. Thanks!

Some of my favorite spots include, from Ridgeway to Telluride, county rd #5, east and west Dallas Divide roads, and Last Dollar rd. . and just about any road or trail out of Telluride. Last fall was stupendous !

Most rafting companies are going to be winding down their operations by September. I'd look into the Lower Animas out of Durango. It should fit your bill and I think they'll still be running it. There are also mellower sections of the Gunnison and I believe of the Lake Fork (by Lake City). I don't know if they're still running that late in the year, though.

I agree with Jackson, the best bet for a mild whitewater trip would be the lower Animas through Durango. But if you are coming for fall colors late in September you are out of luck. In good years they will run through early September. In poor years they will stop in early August. Just Google "Durango Rafting" and you'll find a number of companies.

I'd highly recommend day hikes into Ice Lakes (Silverton area) and Blue Lakes (Ridgway area).

Staley and I spent a week there a few weeks back. It was the best single week of photography in my life. Check out these shots and if you want directions to anything in particular, I'd be happy to help.

How long should we estimate it will take to drive Silver Thread and Telluride to Ridgeway will stops for picture taking but no hiking? We are trying to figure out where/when to stay over night.

Thanks all for the input so far. Your help made for a fantastic trip last year and we are very excited about coming back.
