How to convert RAW to TIFF

Excuse my ignorance, first of all. I am trying to teach myself the concept of RAW image processing. I, so far, have been able to apply the corrections necessary to process the images yet, for the life of me, can't figure out how to save the RAW file as a TIFF.
I shoot a SONY a900 and I am using the Image Data Converter software that came with the camera. My need to use this software is because of only having Photoshop Elements 7 with no RAW conversion software that I can find.
Any Help?

First thing - how new is the Sony? If it came out after Elements 8 came out, then you have two options, but start with the instructions that follow these two options:

- Purchase Elements 8 and see below.
- Go to the Adobe website and look for their DNG convertor. It is a RAW converter that after you made minor adjustments, you save the file as a DGN file. This file you can open up in any recent version of Photoshop (including Elements 7) and then save it as a a TIFF file when you are done processing it. (yeah, yet another intermediate step).

Now for the RAW convertor piece (and the place to begin if you just bought Elements 8 or your camera came out prior to Elements 8 coming out).

Open Elements.

Go to file/open and find a file from the camera you want to work on.

Click on that file.

What should come up is another screen with the image on it and a bunch of other things, That is your RAW conversion software. It is part of PS itself.

If you don't have a Window pop up, I'm guessing there are one of two problems:

- Your camera's file format wasn't understood by Elements (go back to the first two items). Usually, if this is the case there is an error message that pops up which essentially says "Dude, what language is that in?? I don't speak it so you'll have to go back to Adobe to buy more stuff or get the DNG convertor".
- Your software installation has been corrupted. You'll need to reinstall.

I hope that helps. I'm sure there are others who can contribute, especially if this doesn't,

Once the image is in Elements you should be able to use the "Save As" dialog to save a TIFF version. You don't want to over write you RAW file.

Actually, PS won't let you overwrite the RAW files, but the save as command will allow you to save the file as any format, given some minor restrictions (jpegs have to be flattened and converted to 8 bit first, for example).
