Spring again and I'm once again rather busy on my weekends burning through gas on the highways to distant locations. Exposed the above 4x5 Provia sheet through my 150mm Nikor on March 13 at what I have been referring to as an obscure area of the Coast Range between Pacheco and Carrizo. California poppies and gilia tricolor against an aesthetically rounded hill slope top, both of which tend to carpet localized areas of bright green hilly grasslands. Side lit from above in early afternoon in order to get the best bright radiant glow that so vividly impresses people when experiencing such flowery expanses in person. Do recall spending about 15 minutes tweaking my camera position until I had the subtle geometries just right. The best of a dozen sheets I exposed that weekend, my first on the road this year. Given the even receding plain, its an optimal subject for a view camera to tilt and bring the whole frame into sharp focus in order to be able to print out a big print with impressive detail. For at this point non-serious purposes, a crude Epson flat bed scan at a modest 1200 ppi and then my usual Photoshop treatments performing a reasonably decent match of color and luminance to the slide next to my monitor on the light table.

Was back at the area last Sunday too and there were more species bursting out, especially bright new goldfields. My 7 exposed sheets are still in the box as they will have to wait till I add the work I'll get in this coming weekend if I can manage to squirm away from weekend work commitments.

David,

Impressive carpet and even in the small post nice detail. Looks like things are coloring up beuatifully all over California. Although there's some wind today it looks like it's going to calm down over the weekend. I'm sure many CANP members will be out in the field(s). Looking forward to future posts from you and the others I am sure are out there.

The composition works very nice here, David. Taking advantage of the 4x5 adjustments should add to the overall viewing detail in a good sized print as well.

Looks like a strong season for poppies. Nice shot. Crop out the sky and you have a nice flower abstract. :toast:
