Red Deer
I did have a half hour left before I had to go home. So I spent that time in one of our national parks, "De Oostvaardersplassen". 20 yards from the road I saw two Red Deer ladies having their diner in the late evening sun. This is the picture I do like most because of the i.m.o. simplicity and just because I like it. The deer is backlit by the sun, which also lights the reedpanicles (hope this is the right wordt for it, correct me if I'm wrong).

C&C very welcome, thanks in advance.

700mm, F5.6, ISO 400, +1/3 overbel, 1/500 sec.

Lovely shot and nice subtle tones. I'm not so sure about quite so much space on the rhs of the picture, especially with the gaze of the dear directly at the viewer.

Yes very nice. All the colours are complementary and the lighting is just right.

@Andy,
You mean something like this. This is not exactly the same picture. I did a little cropping left en right.
I have to agree with you, I think this looks better.
Thank you.

Tom, I'm not completely sure about the square crop in the second but the subject certainly dominates more than the first. Still a nice pair of images.

Lovely image in a beautiful setting, Tom. I prefer the first image.

I much prefer the first image. The light coming through the reeds is very nice and wetlands are natural habitat for this species.

The first image is stunning and really captured the subject and light very well. I would take just a little more off the lHS to take it a fraction away further from centre but otherwise the comp is better this way IMO.

Nice work.

I much prefer the first post Tom. The lighting really suits the subject, the direct gaze of the deer and the setting all work very well. In the second, although the deer is looking directly at the camera I still feel it needs a bit of extra space to the right.

That’s a picture; it’s nice to see such complementary surroundings and the right light.

Hi Tom,

All been said, but another vote for the first version, by far the better image IMO. Great light on those reeds!

Cheers,

Lewis.
