I have followed the advice given, thank all of you, but, the last image I tried to upload in the avain gallery was 1200x982 at 492kb I once again got an error message "file not found" I took this same image and resized it to 1200x982 at 199kb, it uploaded fine with a slight loos of detail? Has anyone else had the same problem or is it me?

frustrated Dave

Hi David,
I think I know what your issue is. If you are uploading a larger image, you also have to upload a regular sized image (720 pixels on the long side and less than 200kb.) in the upload box which is higher up, then add your larger image in the lower upload box My guess with your second posting is that the program took your larger sized image and resized it to 720 pixels thus causing some loss of detail.

So, if I understand you right, I must upload both file sizes at the same time?

That may be why I get file not found when I try the larger file by itself?

Thanks for responding.....David

That's correct you must upload both a regular sized and a large sized if you want to post a larger sized image. If you just want to post a regular sized image (720 pixels) you can just upload one image. If you would like me to delete your Green Heron so you repost it, let me know.

I don't have any thoughts that haven't already been said but good luck!

I really don't understand why these galleries have to be so ridiculously difficult to upload to. On practically every other site where I upload photos, if there's a requirement for such small files (and I've never seen any that had requirements for such small files anyway) they just automatically do that for you when you upload. I am perpetually way below the allowed # of images here, even after a 3 yr. membership, because I just don't have time to get my images to fit the requirements so specifically for this site only.

To have to take every single image you want to upload here into PS, re-size it & then guess where the KBs are going to come out is just so time-consuming. Often it comes out too big & then I have to redo it. Is there any other way... in the works at least, so that people won't have to make extra files just for this site alone? And oddly, the message you get (or used to get; I haven't uploaded in awhile here) says it will downsize the photo if it's too many KB. But it's never downsized for me; it just says the file is too big or unacceptable or something, even if my image size was fine & only the KB needed to be lower. I don't know what you would have to do to this site so that it would simply downsize the photos automatically rather than us needing to do it, but I just wonder why it's so much easier everywhere else & hope to goodness that it will get easier here. Every other site I'm on accepts photos that are a few MB-- have never seen just KB anywhere. After paying membership dues again, I sure wish I could at least post my allowed # of images, & that it wouldn't take so much time out of my busy life.

Hi Anne,
After you load it into ps and resize it, it shouldn't take more than a few seconds when you go to save it to figure out the kb size to save it at, you don't have to redo your image just use the quality slider when you save to get it under 200kb or 500kb depending on whether you want to post a regular or larger image.

Just as an example let's say you've resized an image to 720 pixels. If you save at full quality (12 on the scale) it may be 500kb, move the slider number to the left and you can easily check how many kb it has at different quality settings. Moving it down to 9 or 10 on the quality scale will usually get it under the kb allowed. This part doesn't take me more than a few moments.

Thanks Nate, leave the heron picture. My last question is, does it matter which file goes in either upload section, like large file in the top browse box and the small file file in the bottom browse box or reversed?

Hi Anne, I feel your pain, but this is the first site I have seen this, but with being able to only upload one photo every 48 hours per gallery, it only takes a few seconds to duplicate a second copy once you get used to it..

This site is devoted to two things: enhancing photographic skills and nature conservation. Addressing the former, the requirements of file size/pixel size/48 hour limit are to spread the load of posting among as many members as possible, as well as to make critiquing easier. The idea here is not to have a place to display your photos, as in an art show; it is to allow members of high caliber photographic skills to comment and critique those photos. For me, it causes me to be very careful in how I "dress" my photos. Not just anybody looks at them, even though this is a public site, Consequently, I spend my time learning how to take and process the photos I take, The mechanics of posting to meet requirements, once you learn them, take almost no time at all.

Well said, Phil.
Takes me less than a minute to prep images for this site using PS. No guessing needed...all the numbers are right there. Looking at the large number of folks who post in the various galleries, I can't imagine I'm in the minority.

Hi David,
You've got it reversed the small photo has to go in the top upload box and the larger photo in the lower download box.

Dave, in reply to your question, the smaller version comes first (where it says "Either upload .jpg File"), and the larger version goes in the bottom box (Upload an optional Larger .jpg Photo (1200 pixels/500kb maximum).

Phil's comments are very apt. And I agree, that once it's incorporated in your workflow, meeting the image size requirements doesn't take more than a minute. Using Save for Web and Devices is an easy way to make sure your saved file is a size that will be accepted.

I didn't know what you were all talking about with the 48-hour thing & all. Now I realize the O.P. having the trouble uploading correct sizes (like I do) was talking about here on NPN. I was referring to the portfolio uploading on PhotoPorfolios.net. Sorry- in my mind these sites are basically melded since they are both in my framework when I'm looking at the tabs across the top. So, the trouble I have with the guesswork: I can save a file under 200 kb, say 196, using the quality slider, etc. but then after it's actually saved, it'll register above 200 kb. Somewhere in the process, more kb get added & it's unpredictable how much will get added. It's been awhile, but I think I had to keep files under 170 kb to be sure it would come out under 200.

The problem people are not realizing or understanding is the cumbersomeness of this process: of existing files (that were edited long ago, etc.) having to be taken into PS & re-saved with all the correct sizings. This means I find one I'd like to upload to my Portfolio. Next I have to wait for PS to open, which in itself takes a couple min. Then I have to re-size it. Then save it, & guess the kb. It seems to me very pokey, compared with most other sites where all of this simply happens for you when you upload. I hate it that my portfolio could hold so many more photos, if I just had time to go back into old files & mess with them. Can anyone point me to a bulk method of doing this same process to, say... 10 files at once?? (for the portfolios). I'm wondering if the Beta version of Lightroom 3 that I just downloaded might help with bulk processes?? (I'm clueless about using it so far though... will take me awhile to learn)
