Reflected star trails + AA battery Q
image is from scotland back in Feb on a stunningly clear night, managed to find an unfrozen part of the loch where a small strean was flowing into the water, messed up the focussing slightly in the dark so this isn't sharp but thought i'd post it anyway to see what people think, so i know if it is an idea worth pursuing in future

40D + 18-55mm
about 20min exposure
FULL Frame

the question i wanted to ask was about putting AA batteries in a camera, is it possible to get something that allows you to do this?

whenever i go on an extended trip without a car i come up against the problem of battery power, am off to the west coast of scotland next week for a fortnight and a hoping my 5 spare batteries will last me the trip if i shoot sparingly. I understand that you can get battery grips that do this but they seem to cost about £150 which is stupid money.

I was wondering if you could get a similar thing but cheaper that just slotted in the batttery compartment as AAs can be bought pretty much anywhere? any help would be appreciated, i hope this isn't a stupid question.

The picture is a wonderful idea and definitely worth doing more of.

Hi Jack,

Why not just purchase a good number of spare batteries. I'm not familiar with the 40D, but if it uses the same batteries as the 20D, i.e. BP511's, you can buy them for about £6 each from 7dayshop.com.
You would pay almost that for a decent set of AA size NiMh's anyway, so there wouldn't be a lot of difference in the cost.
I'm pretty sure you can't use AA's in the camera, other than in the grip which you already know about.
I often combine photography with backpacking and just take along ten or twelve batteries which easily lasts me for a fortnight.

A fine star trail image and I very much like the orange tones in the sky.

The battery grip comes with an AA adapter, which replaces the 2 batteries, its the only way it can be done, you can get chargers that plug in to car 12v supplies, or inverters that can be used with your mains charger, if these are not options Jack's suggestion is the way to go.

Hi Jack, a stunning shot. I don't think that I have seen an image with reflected star trails before. I have a 40D and have purchased 8 cheap BP511 's from 7DAY SHOP .com and find them to be perfectly ok. I have the Canon battery grip but you can get cheaper versions on the net,(about £45) especially from Hong Kong. I have ordered stuff from there with no problems. You will then have the option of using the AA adapter in an emergency. :toast:

Magnificent! What a great idea and the execution is spot on in my opinion.

Hi Jack,

Love these types of shots, I think you've done well and definitely worth doing more! I find the brightest star and reflection a bit eye grabbing, but you couldn't help that. I look forward to seeing more.

Cheers,

Lewis.

Nicely done :toast:

I too find the odd one a bit too bright but easily sorted.
