Great Crested Grebes

I have spent the last few weekends observing these Grebes as they prepare for the mating season.

Out of camera this image is softer than I would like. They are along way away from the bank so consequently, this is a heavy crop and taken with a 500mm plus 1.4X attached. I have spent some extra time selectively sharpening the heads to push it more towards a "keep" than a "delete".

Without the background I would definitely not have bothered and just hit delete. I hope it is sharp enough on your screens.

Canon 1dMk4, 700mm f5.6, 1/1000, ISO400

C&C welcome.

Cheers

Austin

Works for me, the low PoV is what makes it!

Yes the low POV and complementary BG certainly makes this image. Well worth posting,

Excellent shot Austin. I have not been able to get that close with my local GCG's. :toast:

Well it looks excellent to me, nice definition and lighting, my only thought is why not get a 2X converter.

Hi Austin, think I might have gone for a portrait version of this.

As you say anything bigger & the detail/sharpness goes sadly. The colours work well and I like the BG colour. I think it may also need a slight rotation too. The 2x is out of the question Austin, only center point focus, you will start at f/8 min and lose shutter speed and its nowhere near the quality of 1.4x as you know.

Nicely captured but as you say they very seldom come close enough. Agree with Steve about a portrait crop :wavey:

Hi Austin,

Sharpness looks great at this size. The colours and low pov are ace, worth persevering to see if they come closer.

Cheers,

Lewis.

it certainly looks good at this size Austin and I can't believe it's too bad at high res either

Very nice colours and looks sharp enough here. Could do with a touch of clockwise rotation to get the water level though
